Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir has been promoted to Field Marshal. According to reports, Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif’s cabinet took a decision in this regard on Tuesday.

Despite the crushing defeat at the hands of India in the four-day military conflict during Operation Sindoor, the government of Pakistan has promoted its army chief General Asim Munir to the rank of Field Marshal. According to a report in Pakistan’s media ‘Geo News’, this decision was taken in a cabinet meeting led by Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif. This promotion of General Munir has been done at a time when Pakistan has become internationally isolated due to the action taken by India against those giving shelter to terrorists.

Munir was given this promotion for leading the army during Operation ‘Bunyan-um-Marsoos’ against India. Field Marshal is the highest military rank in the Pakistan Army, known as a five-star rank. This rank is one level above the General (four-star). This post is the highest in all three forces – Army, Navy and Air Force.

Munir became the second military officer

According to the report, on 20 May 2025, the Federal Government of Pakistan promoted Army Chief General Asim Munir to the rank of Field Marshal. With this promotion, he has become the second military officer to become Field Marshal in the history of Pakistan. Earlier this honor was received only by Ayub Khan, who served in this post from 1959 to 1967. The post of Field Marshal is considered the highest military rank in the armed forces of Pakistan. General Munir is now the second officer to achieve the five-star rank.

Why was he promoted despite his failure?

The Shahbaz Sharif government may have promoted Asim Munir despite his failure, but its purpose is to show the world that Pakistan had won the military confrontation with India, and General Munir has been rewarded for the same. Whereas the reality is that when India attacked the terrorist bases in Pakistan and PoK under Operation Sindoor, Pakistan’s Army Chief General Munir could not even know about it.

This post is given in special circumstances

This post is given in Pakistan only in special circumstances. There was a demand to give the title of Field Marshal to the country’s former Army Chief General Raheel Sharif. In this regard, a petition was filed in the Islamabad High Court, which said that in view of the excellent work of General Sharif, he should be given this honor. However, the court rejected the petition saying that it is not within its jurisdiction to take a decision on this matter.
